The Personal History of David Copperfield

Based on Charles Dickens’ novel, The Personal History of David Copperfield (2020) is a new adaptation of David Copperfield’s life story. From childhood to adulthood, the gentle David Copperfield is surrounded by kindness, wickedness, poverty and wealth, as he meets a number of remarkable figures from Victorian England. Born six months after his father’s death, David Copperfield is fortunate to have a loving mother. However, when his mother marries Edward Murdstone, who does not like David, the boy is sent to live with the family of his family’s servants, in modest conditions. This will prove to be just the first of David’s many temporary homes, which include an oppressive boarding school run by a ruthless director, and the home of his eccentric aunt, Betsey Trotwood. Wherever he is, David Copperfield, whether he lives in poverty or in comfort, writes strong impressions about everyone he meets, impressions that will one day be his autobiography.
